Breakfree Three
for Open Country
Harrogate
charity, Open Country, have released their third Breakfree Pack,
based around the Nidderdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty
(AONB), which helps anybody, including wheelchair users to access
the countryside. Each pack contains 12 walk cards detailing the
length, gradient, surface type and any barriers that might be
encountered (e.g. steep slopes, steps etc). The walks vary in length
between half a mile and three miles giving people a choice depending
what they feel up to. Each card also has an easy to read map showing
the location of points of interest including natural features,
benches, toilets and cafes making this a fantastic publication for
many different people – families with pushchairs, people with lower
levels of mobility as well as cyclists.
The pack was
launched in Pateley Bridge on Friday 9th November by Open
Country’s new patrons Phil Willis MP and Air Commodore Simon Bostock
DL.
David Shaftoe,
Open Country Project Officer commented:
“It is very
important for people with disabilities to be able to access the
countryside and this pack gives people that chance. Not only is it
of benefit to wheelchair users but also to families with
push-chairs, elderly people with mobility issues or pretty much
anyone visiting the area. This is the third pack that we have
produced, with the previous two having been very well received in
the local area and we hope this one is just as successful”
The launch was
followed by an easy-going, wheelchair accessible walk through
Millennium Green at Pateley Bridge. Open Country would like to thank
all the sponsors of the pack including: The George A Moore
Foundation, The Charles & Elsie Sykes Trust, Nidderdale AONB,
Harrogate Borough Council, Yorkshire Agricultural Society, Harrogate
Strategic Partnership, Platinum Print, Bob Campbell and The Break
Free Charity and Bettys and Taylors of Harrogate.
